Sanju Samson Named Player of the Tournament

India’s star batter Sanju Samson was named the Player of the Tournament at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after delivering a series of match-winning performances that powered the India national cricket team to a historic title triumph.

The award was announced following India’s dominant victory over the New Zealand national cricket team in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Samson played a crucial role during the business end of the tournament, producing explosive innings under pressure and emerging as one of the most impactful players of the competition.

Samson’s Crucial Comeback in the Tournament

Interestingly, Samson did not feature in several of India’s early matches during the group stage, missing fixtures against the United States national cricket team, Pakistan national cricket team and Netherlands national cricket team.

However, the right-handed opener returned to the playing XI after India suffered a setback against the South Africa national cricket team in the Super Eight stage.

After a modest comeback innings against the Zimbabwe national cricket team, Samson quickly found his rhythm in the knockout phase of the tournament.

Match-Winning Performances in Key Games

Samson produced one of the standout performances of the tournament against the West Indies cricket team, smashing an unbeaten 97 during a tense chase that effectively kept India’s campaign alive.

He then carried that momentum into the semi-final against the England national cricket team in Mumbai, where he delivered another impressive half-century.

Samson’s brilliance continued in the final against New Zealand, where he struck a powerful 89, helping India post a record total and eventually secure the title.

With three consecutive half-centuries in the knockout stage, Samson finished the tournament with 321 runs in just five innings at an extraordinary average and strike rate of nearly 200.

Competition for the Prestigious Award

Samson beat strong competition from several standout performers across the tournament.

Among the contenders were Pakistan’s Sahibzada Farhan, South Africa’s Aiden Markram and Lungi Ngidi, England’s Will Jacks, New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra and Tim Seifert, along with USA’s Shadley van Schalkwyk.

Despite the stiff competition, Samson’s performances in the most crucial matches ultimately earned him the prestigious honour.

Joining an Elite Indian List

With this achievement, Samson became only the third Indian player to win the Player of the Tournament award in T20 World Cup history.

He joined an elite list featuring Jasprit Bumrah and Indian batting legend Virat Kohli, who won the award twice in 2014 and 2016.

The global list of winners also includes notable names such as Shahid Afridi, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kevin Pietersen, Shane Watson, David Warner and Sam Curran.

Samson Reflects on Emotional Achievement

Speaking after receiving the award, Samson admitted the moment felt like a dream after years of preparation and persistence.

He revealed that the journey had begun long before this tournament, recalling how he stayed focused and continued to work hard even when he was part of squads without getting opportunities.

For Samson, the award capped off a remarkable tournament where he stepped up on the biggest stage and helped guide India to another historic T20 World Cup triumph.
