The Netherlands have placed their faith in experience as they announced a 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, naming Scott Edwards as captain for the global showpiece.
Slotted in a challenging Group A alongside defending champions India, Pakistan, Namibia and the USA, the Dutch will once again look to punch above their weight on the world stage — something they have made a habit of doing in recent editions.
The squad features a strong core of players who have represented the Netherlands in multiple ICC events, underlining the team management’s preference for stability and big-match temperament over experimentation.
Netherlands squad: Scott Edwards (c), Noah Croes, Colin Ackermann, Bas de Leede, Aryan Dutt, Fred Klaassen, Kyle Klein, Michael Levitt, Zach Lion-Cachet, Max O’Dowd, Logan van Beek, Timm van der Gugten, Roelof van der Merwe, Paul van Meekeren, Saqib Zulfiqar.
Scott Edwards to Lead Familiar Core
Wicketkeeper-batter Scott Edwards continues as captain, with the side built around seasoned campaigners such as Bas de Leede, Logan van Beek, Max O’Dowd and Roelof van der Merwe — all of whom have delivered match-winning performances for the Dutch in recent years.
All-round depth remains a key strength, with Colin Ackermann, van Beek and de Leede offering balance with both bat and ball, while the pace attack will be led by Paul van Meekeren, Fred Klaassen and Kyle Klein.
Spin options include the experienced van der Merwe alongside Aryan Dutt and Saqib Zulfiqar, giving the Netherlands flexibility across conditions in India and Sri Lanka.
Head Coach Backs Preparation and Experience
Head coach Ryan Cook expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness, highlighting their recent exposure to top-level opposition and subcontinental conditions.
“With experience in the past few World Cups, having played against all of the teams in our group recently and having exposure to the conditions in Sri Lanka and India, we are confident in our preparations,” Cook said.
He added that the players and support staff have made “significant sacrifices” in the lead-up to the tournament, and believes the squad’s depth and versatility will be crucial as they aim to progress beyond the group stage.
Giant-Killers with History on Their Side
The Netherlands have built a reputation as one of world cricket’s most dangerous associate sides. From stunning England in the opening match of the 2009 T20 World Cup to their famous victories in more recent editions, the Dutch have shown they thrive when written off.
This will be their seventh appearance at the Men’s T20 World Cup, having qualified through the Europe Qualifiers alongside Italy — a testament to their consistency at the associate level.
Tough Start Against Pakistan
The Edwards-led side will begin their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against Pakistan on February 7 in Colombo — a high-pressure opener that could set the tone for their tournament.
With nothing to lose and experience firmly on their side, the Netherlands will once again look to disrupt the established order and remind the cricketing world why they remain one of the most feared underdogs in global tournaments.
