In a major announcement that instantly lifted the buzz around the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, former India captain and two-time T20 World Cup champion Rohit Sharma has been officially unveiled as the tournament ambassador. The declaration was made by ICC Chair Jay Shah during the global schedule reveal ceremony on Tuesday evening.
The tenth edition of the tournament will run from February 7 to March 8, 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, marking cricket’s blockbuster return to the subcontinent.
A Full-Circle Moment for Rohit Sharma
For Rohit, this appointment feels like a homecoming. He has been part of every single T20 World Cup from the inaugural 2007 edition to 2024 — a remarkable streak spanning nine tournaments, 47 matches and 1220 runs at a strike rate of 133.04.
His journey began with MS Dhoni’s young brigade in 2007, where Rohit made crucial contributions, including an unbeaten 50 vs South Africa* and 30 in the final against Pakistan*, helping India lift the maiden title.
Seventeen years later, he scripted another chapter of glory — this time as captain — steering India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title and finishing as the team’s highest run-scorer with 257 runs at 156.70.
After lifting the trophy in Barbados, Rohit announced his retirement from T20Is, ending his journey as one of the format’s greatest torchbearers.
“Great to Be Back in a New Role” – Rohit Sharma
Speaking after being named ambassador, Rohit said:
“It is great to have the tournament back in India and for me to be associated once again with the tournament, this time in a new capacity as the Brand Ambassador. I wish all the players the very best and hope they enjoy India’s hospitality and take back a lot of memories.”
Rohit’s presence is expected to inject energy into the promotion of the 2026 edition, especially in India where cricket fans continue to celebrate his 2024 triumph.
A Star Who Redefined T20I Batting
Across his dazzling T20I career, Rohit amassed 4231 runs, an average of 32.01, and a strike rate of 140.89 — numbers that firmly place him among the finest to ever play the format.
His explosive powerplays, tactical calm, and leadership flair shaped India’s white-ball identity for more than a decade.
With India set to host the World Cup after 18 years, having Rohit — one of the country’s most loved cricketers — at the forefront adds a sense of nostalgia, excitement, and national pride.
