Australia have unveiled a provisional 15-player squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with selectors leaving the door open for late changes as fitness concerns around a handful of key players continue to be monitored.
The reigning 2021 champions will be led by Mitchell Marsh, who captains a familiar-looking group selected with conditions in India and Sri Lanka firmly in mind.
Cummins, Green return as Australia plan ahead
The headline inclusions are Pat Cummins, Cameron Green and Cooper Connolly, all of whom missed Australia’s most recent T20I series against India. Their return adds depth and flexibility to a squad that balances power-hitting with all-round options.
Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, both managing workloads in recent months, are expected to be fit in time for the tournament, while Tim David also features despite ongoing fitness checks.

Spin-heavy approach for subcontinental conditions
Australia have clearly leaned into spin for the subcontinent, naming a spin-heavy unit around frontline leg-spinner Adam Zampa. He is supported by Matthew Kuhnemann, rising all-rounder Cooper Connolly, and the part-time options of Glenn Maxwell and Matthew Short.
Chair of selectors George Bailey said the squad reflects Australia’s recent stability in T20 cricket and their confidence in handling diverse conditions.
“The T20 side has enjoyed a long run of success, which allowed us to focus on a group capable of performing across the conditions India and Sri Lanka may present,” Bailey said.
No left-arm quick as Bartlett gets nod
One notable talking point is the absence of a left-arm fast bowler. With Mitchell Starc retired from T20 internationals and Spencer Johnson sidelined through injury, selectors opted for right-arm seamer Xavier Bartlett instead of a like-for-like replacement such as Ben Dwarshuis.
Bartlett’s inclusion underlines Australia’s preference for control and adaptability over pure variety.
Fitness watch and room for late changes
While the core of the squad is settled, selectors have stressed that this remains a preliminary group. Cummins, Hazlewood and David are all “tracking well,” but changes could still be made before the final submission deadline if required.
Australia are also yet to announce their squad for the three-match T20I series against Pakistan, which will serve as the final tune-up before the World Cup begins.
What’s next for Australia?
With a settled leadership group, explosive batting depth, and a bowling attack tailored for slow surfaces, Australia look well-positioned as they begin their title defence. The upcoming Pakistan series and fitness updates will now shape the final squad makeup ahead of the tournament.
